• The Cessna Citation V Ultra was released in 1994 with a modernised cabin, upgraded avionics and more powerful Pratt & Whitney JT15D-5D turbofan engines than the Citation V.

The Citation Ultra is an upgrade of the successful Citation V, which had dominated the light jet market for over 10 years. The V’s large cabin and baggage hold remained, but the aircraft was brought into the modern day with upgraded avionics and more efficient engines.

Interior design

The Cessna Citation Ultra’s cabin is the same size as the V’s, measuring in at a roomy 17.4 feet long, 4.9 feet wide and 4.8 feet high. This space is used to the fullest, with extra-wide seats that recline 60 degrees and rotate a full 360 degrees. Other notable features include two-zone temperature control and 14 large windows letting in plenty of natural light.

The aircraft can be configured for seven passengers, with club-four seating flanked by two forward-facing seats in the rear and one at the front. Some configurations feature two smaller seats at the front facing the cabin door, increasing the maximum capacity to eight passengers, while the enclosed lavatory can be used as another extra seat if required.

The cabin is undeniably spacious, especially compared to competitors, while the large baggage hold can accommodate seven suitcases and three golf bags.

Technological features

The Citation V Ultra is powered by two Pratt & Whitney JT15D-5D engines, each delivering 3,045 pounds of thrust. Inside, the aircraft comes standard with an advanced Honeywell Primus 1000 avionics suite, with three eight-inch by seven-inch CRT screens including primary flight displays (PFDs) and a centre multi-function display (MFD).

History

The Citation V Ultra launched in 1994 and was named Flying Magazine’s “Best Business Jet”. Cessna kept the Citation V’s large cabin, but improved a host of features and modernised the aircraft’s  technology. The more efficient Pratt & Whitney JT15D-5D turbofan engines offer 145 more pounds of thrust per side, while Honeywell Primus 1000 EFIS glass cockpit avionics include three CRT computer screens and one centre multi-function display.

More than 250 Ultras were delivered until production ceased in 1999, as Cessna switched attention to the Encore and subsequent Encore+.

Manufacturer

Cessna was founded in 1927 by Clyde Cessna and Victor Roos. It was originally called the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company, but Roos’ name was dropped after he resigned just one month into the partnership and sold back his interest to Cessna.

Headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, the company specialised in producing small piston-powered planes and business jets. After becoming one of the world’s biggest general aviation producers, it was bought by General Dynamics in 1985 and by Textron in 1992. In March 2014, Cessna stopped operating as a subsidiary company and joined Beechcraft and Hawker as one of the three distinct brands produced by Textron Aviation.
