COUNTRY GUIDE BARBADOS

Private jet charter to Barbados

Nestled between the Caribbean and the Atlantic, Barbados is an island from which to cast away your cares. This tiny isle has many faces; white-sand beaches, palm-fringed fishing villages, historic plantation homes, acres of sugar cane fields and an interior bursting with lush vegetation. There’s a good reason why celebrities and millionaires flock to Barbados during the winter months – the island is home to some of the Caribbean’s most luxurious hotels and idyllic beaches. Travel between January and April, the driest months, and you’re pretty much guaranteed days of endless sunshine and balmy, rum-filled nights.

Super-luxe five-star hotels preside over the prestigious west coast, from iconic grand-dames to adults-only boutique boltholes. Affectionately known as the ‘Platinum Coast’, St James is the place to go for superb Bajan hospitality, fine dining, ocean-facing suites, championship golf and some of the best beaches on the island – including Paynes Bay, where the tranquil waters and coral reef are perfect for sailing, waterskiing and snorkelling with turtles. Here you’ll also find celebrity favourite Daphne’s restaurant, famous for its delectable Bajan-Italian fusion cuisine.

Fine dining has its place on Barbados, but so do more informal eateries where location sells the spot. Animal Flower Cave, perched on a clifftop at the island’s northernmost point, is one such gem. Greeted by spectacular panoramic ocean views, here you can enjoy lunch before visiting the island’s only accessible sea cave, where you’ll find sea anemones among the shallow waters. If you’re lucky, you might also spot the humpback whales that come here during breeding months.

Barbados boasts plenty of historic sites, including Farley Hill National Park (officially opened by Queen Elizabeth in 1966) and St Nicholas Abbey, a Jacobean plantation home with fully operational rum distillery. Another key landmark is the Barbados Garrison in historic Bridgetown, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is home to the island’s Defense Force. It’s worth setting aside a whole day to explore Bridgetown, where you can enjoy fantastic duty-free shopping, select colourful fresh fruit at Cheapside Market and admire St Michael’s Cathedral, Barbados’ tallest Anglican church.

The debate rages on as to whether Barbados or Brazil was the birthplace of rum. Either way, the Bajans celebrate their assumed honour with local rum shacks at every turn. One of the best places to experience the locals’ laidback way of life is at Oistins Bay Gardens’ famous ‘Friday Night Fish Fry’, feasting on swordfish, lobster and marlin from street vendors whilst dancing to calypso and Jamaican ska – an informal, family-friendly event that shouldn’t be missed. The lively south coast is also a popular surfing spot, with Long Beach and Silver Sand’s rougher waters serving as a playground for kite and windsurfers.

Barbados is an intoxicating mix of colonial landmarks, luxury hotels and restaurants, breathtaking beaches and an easygoing atmosphere that makes it impossible not to unwind. Come here if you’re ready to throw your schedule out of the window.
