The cape was first sighted by Dutch sailors in the early 17th Century and was visited by 19th-century pearl fishers, but it wasn’t until World War II that the area started to grow. It was a joint Australian and American submarine base during the war years and later became a naval communication station operated by the U.S.A. Today, it’s the ‘range to reef’ experience that brings visitors to this corner of the world. Exmouth, a small town on the eastern coast of the cape, is the region’s main town and the setting-off point for many adventures in the nearby national park and marine park.
Cape Range National Park runs along the western edge of the North West Cape and is home to limestone peaks, deep canyons and mile-upon-mile of untouched beaches and windswept sand dunes. The national park’s coastline is the gateway to the UNESCO-listed Ningaloo Reef, which stretches for 162 miles along the western edge of the cape and beyond. This underwater world is teeming with marine life including hundreds of types of fish and 200 species of coral as well as dolphins, turtles and dugong. It’s also one of the best places in the world to see whale sharks, which range in size from four to 12 metres long and migrate to the reef in large numbers between March and August. Divers can head below the waves for the best view, while non-divers can join a boat tour and enjoy a swim with these majestic creatures.
In places the reef is just a few hundred metres offshore, allowing you to snorkel straight from the beach, perhaps reaching the coral gardens by kayak or even just swimming out. Turquoise Bay, Coral Bay and Oyster Stacks are all located within easy reach of the reef and cater for different abilities. Some parks of the reef are affected by moderate to strong currents, so be sure to check the conditions before you set off.
