With its innovative design and unique modern engines, the Honda HA-420 HondaJet is one of the most technologically advanced light jets on the market.

About this aircraft

  • The Honda HA-420 HondaJet was introduced in 2005 and the first delivery was completed in 2016.
  • With its Honda-designed engines and aerodynamic design, the HondaJet can fly non-stop from London to Milan and New York to Boston.
  • The cabin is typically laid out to accommodate up to five passengers. A further passenger can be seated in the rear lavatory if required.
  • The HondaJet’s baggage hold has space for around six suitcases.
  • In 2018, the HondaJet APMG upgrade package was released for the HA-420. The eight-passenger HondaJet Elite was also unveiled in the same year.
  • Over 200 HondaJets had been delivered by the end of 2021.

One of the world’s most advanced light business jets, the HondaJet flies faster and higher than similar aircraft. It’s also roomier, quieter and more fuel-efficient.

Interior design

The HondaJet’s spacious cabin can accommodate five passengers with plenty of legroom. A typical layout features four executive seats in a classic club formation and a single-seat divan at the rear.

The flexible leather club-style seats have cup holders and tray tables. Other amenities include electro-chromatic window shades and a private aft lavatory, where a sixth passenger can be seated if required.

Technological features

The Honda HA-420 is powered by two GE Honda HF120 turbofan engines, delivering a maximum thrust of 8.04 kN each.

The aircraft’s cockpit features the Garmin G3000 all-glass avionics system, with three 14-inch high-resolution displays and dual touchscreen controllers. It can also run Garmin's Synthetic Vision Technology for graphical 3D rendering of terrain.

History

Honda began researching small business jets in the late 1980s to develop their own proof-of-concept aircraft. The HondaJet was designed in 1997 and tested in the Boeing wind tunnel two years later. A pre-production version took its maiden flight in 2003 and the aircraft was unveiled in July 2005 at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh airshow.

Honda announced plans to commercialise the HondaJet the following year, with the first production model completing its inaugural flight in June 2014 after several delays. The aircraft received type certification in 2015 and deliveries began that December.

The HondaJet was the top-selling twin-engine light business jet of 2017, with 43 aircraft delivered around the globe. Honda Aircraft Company won several industry awards for the HondaJet’s many technological innovations, including its over-wing engine mount and entirely carbon composite fuselage.

The upgraded HondaJet Elite launched in 2018 with improved avionics, increased range and an optional galley, followed by the Elite S variant in 2021. The HondaJet Elite II was announced in 2022.

Manufacturer

Honda Aircraft Company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Honda Motor Company, founded in August 2006 by aeronautical engineer Michimasa Fujino.

The prototype HondaJet was developed and flight-tested at the company’s corporate headquarters at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina. Between 2006 and 2015, the operation was expanded from a single hangar to a 133-acre campus with a research and development centre, manufacturing plant and customer service centre. An extra facility was later added for producing wings and storing service parts.

Cost

Depending on factors like age and condition, a used Honda HA-420 HondaJet costs around $2.5 million (USD). A new model can cost from $5.3 million.
