GULFSTREAM G500

GULFSTREAM G500

  • Passengers 13

The newer Gulfstream G500 is a clean-sheet replacement for the G450 and a shorter-range version of the G550, flying higher and faster than almost all of its competitors.

About this aircraft

  • The original G500 launched in 2003 as a shorter-range version of the G550 and a variant of the GV.
  • Gulfstream began delivering an updated model in 2018, with new engines and a redesigned cabin that’s nearly nine feet shorter in length than the G550’s.
  • Older G500s seat 16-17 passengers, while the updated model is typically laid out for 13, with an extra seat in the enclosed lavatory if needed.
  • The baggage compartment can hold around 18 suitcases, allowing each passenger to bring at least one item of luggage – even when the aircraft is at full capacity.
  • The G500’s impressive non-stop range of 9,816 km connects cities like London and Dubai, New York and Milan, and Montreal and Paris.

Uniting performance and comfort with revolutionary technology, the updated Gulfstream G500 is a luxurious option for both long- and short-haul charters. As a newer aircraft, it’s generally more modern and advanced than competitors like the Bombardier Global 5000.

Interior design

The newer G500’s cabin has up to three living areas and a comfortable 6 ft 4 in of headroom. Its open-plan layout typically features 10 individual seats, a three-person sofa and a large TV on a credenza facing the aft dining area. The pre-2012 model has a high-density interior, which may have two three-seat divans and can seat as many as 17 passengers.

Each of the newer model’s wide, articulating leather seats has a simple touchscreen interface for controlling the lighting, temperature and entertainment system. Passengers can also access these functions using a cabin control app on their smart devices.

The G500’s standard layout has a large galley at the cabin’s front or rear, as well as a lavatory in the rear.

Below are the two typical configurations found onboard the new Gulfstream G500.

Interesting facts

  • Gulfstream’s large, oval signature windows flood the cabin with natural light and are positioned so passengers can see the world below from their seats.
  • The cabin is filtered with 100% fresh air and maintains a maximum altitude of 4,850 feet to help reduce jet lag.
  • The baggage compartment is accessible during a flight.
  • The G500 can fly you from London to Los Angeles up to 20 minutes faster than the Bombardier Global 500.
  • The updated model was Gulfstream’s first aircraft to use active fly-by-wire digital sidesticks in place of a traditional control wheel.

Technological features

The old version of the G500 has B710C4-11 engines and a Honeywell Advanced Flight Deck Display Suite. The newer model is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW814GA PurePower turbofans and can travel 8,149 km at Mach 0.90 and 9,630 km at Mach 0.86.

The G500 was the first civil aircraft with BAE Systems active sidesticks in the cockpit. Its Honeywell Symmetry Flight Deck has four portrait main displays and three touchscreens on the overhead panel instead of stand-alone switches. In the glare shield are four force-touch screens, complemented by left- and right-hand touch standby displays at each seat. The enhanced flight vision system is displayed through a 42×30° field-of-view head-up display.

In the cabin, the Gulfstream Cabin Experience and Gulfstream Cabin Control app enable passengers to control their environment.

History

The G500 was manufactured from 2003 to 2012 as a shorter-range version of the G550, with a reduced fuel capacity and a range of 11,095 km.

In 2016, production started on an updated model designed to replace the G450. The revamped G500 was first delivered in September 2018.
