CESSNA 404 TITAN

CESSNA 404 TITAN

  • Passengers 9

The Cessna 404 Titan is one of Cessna’s largest piston-engined twin jets, capable of flying nine passengers over relatively short distances.

About this aircraft

  • The Cessna 404 Titan has been in service since 1976.
  • The Cessna 404’s cabin is typically configured to accommodate eight or nine passengers. If owned, a passenger can also be seated in the cockpit with a single pilot. This option is not available for charter.
  • With a ceiling of approximately 26,000 feet and a maximum range of more than 2,000 miles, the unpressurized 404 Titan can fly both high and far for a piston. A full aircraft will, however, result in a lower range.
  • The Cessna 404 Titan can generally accommodate 12kg of baggage per person if the aircraft is full. Approximately five soft suitcases can be brought onto the aircraft.
  • Production of the Cessna 404 Titan ceased in 1982, by which time there were seven different variants available.

Despite its age, the Cessna 404 Titan still offers a comfortable and versatile charter option. Several 404 Titans underwent minor modifications from the 1980s and a few have since been retrofitted to feature more modern interiors.

Interior design

The Cessna 404 Titan is typically configured with nine passenger seats in the cabin. These are aligned in a 1-1 formation, with one ‘missing’ seat on one side to make space for the cabin door. There are variations to this standard configuration, with some retrofitted aircraft having fewer seats, but more legroom. While the cabin is unpressurised, it does offer air conditioning.

Below are two possible configurations found inside a Cessna 404 Titan.

Interesting facts to learn before you fly

  • The 404 Titan can fly in icy conditions. It can fly in similar conditions as a Boeing 737.
  • The Titan underwent minor modifications from 1980. These included a redesign of the wingtips, increasing the wing span and adding features, such as a pressurised cabin and optional lavatory.

Technological features

The original Cessna 404 Titan is powered by two 375 hp/280 kW turbocharged Continental Motors GTSIO-520 piston engines. Depending on the production year, the aircraft was fitted with Cessna I, II or III factory-fitted avionics equipment as standard.

History

In 1975, Cessna announced that it wanted to develop a new piston twin capable of airline, freight and corporate works that could take off from a 770-metre airstrip with a 1,560kg payload.

Using elements of the Cessna 402 and the Cessna 441 Conquest, the Cessna 404 Titan was the largest piston twin-engine aircraft developed by the company. The aircraft was powered by two  Continental Motors GTSIO-520 piston engines that produced a maximum thrust of 375 horsepower each. The first prototype conducted its maiden flight in 1975 and In 1976 aircraft deliveries started.

Over its production, three primary variants of the Titan manifested. The Titan Ambassador is a conventional 10-seater passenger aircraft (nine for charter), the Titan Courier is a convertible passenger/cargo variant, and the Titan Freighter is a pure cargo variant. The Freighter was particularly designed for freight operations with a reinforced floor, cargo doors, and walls, and a ceiling built from materials resistant from any impact and bump.

The Cessna 404 Titan went through minor enhancements from 1980 when the wingspan was extended and the wingtips were restructured. Production on the aircraft ceased in 1982.

Manufacturer

The Cessna Aircraft Company began in 1927, when Kansas-based farmer and mechanic Clyde V. Cessna assembled a French Bleriot plane from a kit using his own water-cooled engines. Cessna became famous for manufacturing small-sized piston-powered aircraft for private and business use.

In 1940, Cessna signed a contract to produce 33 T-50s for the US Army and later made 180 more of the jets for the Canadian Air Force. The company expanded to make corporate jets and has since become the industry’s leading private jet manufacturer, thanks partly to its incredibly popular Citation XLS range.

Cessna was bought by General Dynamics in 1985, before global conglomerate Textron – which also makes Beechcraft and Hawker aircraft – acquired the brand in 1995. Textron specialises in creating bespoke mission-specific jets for government, military and commercial customers. Today, Cessna produces turboprops, pistons and private jets.

Cost

Depending on a variety of factors, the average price of a Cessna 404 Titan costs approximately $450,000 (USD).
