The unique world of cargo aircraft

We sat down with Stefano Dalaimo, Cargo Assistant Director, to discuss some of the more unique and unusual cargo aircraft we charter at ACS.

Cargo planes in themselves are unusual in that they are (usually) specifically-built aircraft designed to handle extraordinary tasks (and loads) than more common aircraft can typically handle. These aircraft are equipped with unique features which enable them to transport outsized, sensitive, or time-critical cargo efficiently and safely.

Antonov An-124

The Antonov An-124 Ruslan, designed in the 1950s, but introduced to the international cargo charter market in the 1980s, is a remarkable aircraft with several unique features. Boasting an impressive cargo capacity of 120 tonnes (thus making it one of the largest cargo planes in the world), the An-124 is a versatile plane, frequently used for the transportation of outsized cargo such as heavy machinery and industrial components, especially in the oil and gas industries. The An-124 is unusual in that cargo can be loaded from both the nose and rear of the aircraft, significantly reducing loading times. Equipped with four engines, it offers exceptional power, and a high level of redundancy in the case of system failure. With internal cranes streamlining the loading process, and simplifying the task of manoeuvring cargo, it is easy to see why the An-124 has set numerous world records in its field, including an absolute altitude-to-payload record.

Ilyushin Il-76

A fascinating aircraft with several unique features, the Ilyushin Il-76 has become a stalwart of cargo charter. Introduced in the 1970s, the Il-76 boasts a glass nose for enhanced visibility and navigation, giving an extra crew member a birds-eye view of the terrain below. Loading from the rear, the Il-76 is particularly useful in the transportation of oil and gas pipes, drills, and other freight of outsize length thanks to its spacious cargo hold. The robust construction of the Il-76’s airframe, its ability to operate in both challenging climates and from unpaved runways make the aircraft perfect for moving freight to and from remote and challenging locations. The Il-76’s combination of versatility, capacity, and ruggedness alongside its unmistakable silhouette with its glass nose, ‘t'-tail fin, and anhedral wings combine to define this icon of cargo aircraft.

ATR 72-600F

The ATR 72’s uniqueness as a cargo plane stems from its versatility and efficiency. Originally built as a regional airliner, ATR saw an opportunity to create a variant of the ATR 72 for the transportation of regional freight, and the ATR 72-600F was born. With the ATR 72-600F variant being purposely-built for freight, a number of optimisations for cargo operations were introduced. The ATR 600F features a large side-loading cargo door, along with a spacious hold capable of carrying both bulk cargo and standard unit load devices. The ATR 72-600F’s fuel efficiency and low emission credentials, alongside its ability to operate from short, unpaved runways make it an ideal aircraft for regional logistics.

Diamond DA42 Twin Star

The Diamond DA42 Twin Star is a particularly-unique aircraft in this list of unusual freighters due to its very specific applications. Originally designed as a small passenger aircraft (with one pilot, and three passengers), the DA42 has carved out a unique role for itself in specialised cargo transport, with its size making it perfect for ‘short hops’, making it highly-efficient for quick, regional flights. One of the DA42’s standout uses is the transportation of emergency medical equipment; these include, but are not limited to radioactive materials for the treatment of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases, and the expedited delivery of donor organs. The DA42’s versatility in both civilian and medical applications highlights its versatility and utility in urgent, life-saving missions.
