The Airbus A340-300 VIP is one of the most popular and luxurious aircraft to charter. Matt Purton and Mark Hayter discuss why the aircraft is so sought-after.

Spotlight on the Airbus A340-300 VIP

“The Airbus A340-300 VIP is one of the best aircraft to charter in the world,” says our Group Commercial Jets Director, Matt Purton. “With 100 lie-flat seats, generous legroom, a large cargo hold and global range, it’s the most luxurious option for a range of group charter solutions.”

The A340 VIP is popular with a number of our clients, including those travelling to a celebration like a birthday or wedding, business executives flying for an incentive trip, and musicians planning an international tour. Matt and our Commercial Jets VP for North America, Mark Hayter, tell us more about why the A340 VIP is so sought-after.

The Airbus A340 VIP – a snapshot

“This particular Airbus A340 VIP was built in 2000 and refurbished in 2016,” says Matt. “While a standard Airbus A340-300 can typically fly between 250 and 300 passengers, this VIP aircraft features just 100 large, lie-flat seats, which are spread across three spacious zones.

“The A340 VIP can fly non-stop for about 8,000 miles (13,000 km), which equates to about 14 hours of flight time. This means it can complete long-haul flights such as Los Angeles to London and London to Johannesburg or Tokyo.

“Its large cabin and long range are matched by a sizable cargo hold with space for about 1,000 items of luggage. The aircraft also comes equipped with fully-enclosed forward, middle and aft lavatories, as well as a full refreshment centre.”

The interior

“The first thing you notice when entering the cabin is its sheer size,” Matt says. “It’s over 50 metres long (165.29 ft), almost five-and-a-half metres wide (17.40 ft) and nearly two-and-a-half metres high (7.64 ft), giving even tall basketball players plenty of headroom.

“It’s important passengers are well-fed and well-hydrated on a 13- to 14-hour flight. One of the best things about the A340 VIP is that it has a huge galley, so the crew can serve up to three different meals during long-haul flights.

“The aircraft also boasts two sofas at the rear of the cabin, so passengers can hold a business meeting or relax and chat informally. These impressive amenities mean you’ll arrive prepared, well-rested and ready to go.”

“The majority of the A340 VIP is laid out in a 2-2-2 configuration,” says Mark. “Each lie-flat seat has cup holders, a reading light, a foldaway table and plenty of legroom. Mattress toppers can be added to fully reclined seats, as well as blankets, pillows and other amenities to promote restful sleep.

“The aircraft can accommodate up to eight cabin crew to assist throughout the flight.”

Tailored to your requirements

“The Airbus A340’s impressive offering makes it the ideal charter choice for a range of customers,” Mark continues. “Its generous capacity and luxurious amenities are ideal for big events like weddings, birthdays and engagement parties. The lie-flat seats and break-out areas are popular for large incentive trips, while the huge baggage hold makes it a perfect choice for bands or productions requiring room for equipment on international tours.

“Our dedicated Account Managers and Flight Services team can tailor the aircraft’s interior with branded headrest covers, coasters, napkins and amenity kits – anything the customer wants to ensure their brand is front and centre for a truly memorable flight. Our teams can also organise in-flight catering, taking into account any special dietary requirements and requests.”
