The new Covid-19 variant detected in South Africa has prompted several countries, including the UK, to restrict travel from a number of southern African nations.
Countries place new restrictions on African travel
Following the discovery of a new COVID-19 variant (B.1.1.529) first detected in South Africa, the UK, along with a number of other nations, have placed travel restrictions on several southern African countries.
The UK has curbed travel to six countries including South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini. Travellers from these nations will not be able to enter the UK unless they are UK or Irish Nationals, or UK residents. Flights to the UK from these countries have also been temporarily suspended until a quarantine system is implemented.
Other nations that have also imposed travel restrictions on southern African countries are Singapore, Japan, Israel, Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic with more expected to follow suit.
